AMMA Canteen

'AMMA' word means a lot to many in South India. Amma is probably the first word a child utters before it starts talking. In Indian culture Amma or mother has many significance. But the Amma, I am going to discuss here is different.

During my recent trip to Chennai last week, city was cosily cool during the winter as agaisnt its threatening heat of Khatri. I had come back to Chennai after a gap of two years and felt there was so much warmth even in this cool climate, which can not be fathomed and described in words. Next morning, I was taken to a new restuarant started by the government of Tamil Nadu for the poor. The AMMA  Canteen is a first of its kind government owned enterprise, providing food at the lowest price to the poor people of the state, where idli, dosa and tea is available for one  rupee each and meals for rupees four. Food is prepared under the hygienic conditions as per the Food safety requirement. But due to the highly competitive prizing the place is much crowded to find a way to go inside. After waiting thirty minutes we could get our four idly sambar which was delicious. I heard the Amma canteen has been started in all the District headquarters of the state.

The name of the canteen, Amma canteen has become a common name amongst all the poor, students and middle class of the State. A novel government experiment which has succeeded because of its highly effective implementation. This is one rarest social security measures started by any governments in India which has become succesful and popular. If the intention is good the result will always be good.
