The
fifty shades of grey by E.L James, first one out of the fifty shades
trilogy of the adult romance, did
bewilder me putting me into a dilemma whether to
write the review or not. Last month after attending the
book release of one book on a week end, I spent some time in the Crossword book
store. T he sales guy persuaded me to buy a book by praising all the books I
picked up. Unable to come to a decision, I asked him about bestselling book. He
brought me a fat, thick packet of three books saying the first one sells most.
I picked up the first one titled ‘Fifty Shades of grey’. Looking at the size of the book, I leafed through
to see the last page number which was 511 . I dropped the book, as it did not
fit into my kind of books. I asked the sales man about the number of copies he
sold in a day. He said 5-6 copies a day
which was quite a good number. However, it was not for me to read such a big
one at this time. Same day in the
evening I googled and to my surprise I found a soft copy and went through the
first few pages, it seemed interesting with a good amount of adjectives all around and less of Yankee slangs. Still, it did not impress me to buy the book and dropped the
idea of reading further.
Then, one day when I was in Mumbai, I visited the book store,
and casually asked the store assistant about the number of copies he sold. He
said he sold 10-15 copies a day. Now this is an impressive figure much more
than anything had ever heard of. Only Chetan Bhagat’s book s were sold somewhere
near to that. Getting curious to find out what is good about the book, I picked
up this book.
The story begins very well with the interview of an young
millionaire CEO Christian Grey by
Anasthasia Steele. The romance starts soon after the first page with a
smooth flow of language and quite a good number of adjectives used effectively.
Ana
is one of those people who wish to have everything she desires. And everything she wants has to be ‘hot’ and
there it was with the rich and famous, Mr.Grey. But this could not be the
reason for it s high sales. After the initial few chapters, the romance turns erotic.
I thought it has to end and skipped through the pages and pages. The utopian eroticism goes on without any censure or
control. Finally, I closed the book disheartened with a feeling that it can
even beat the soft porn books making me wonder whether our values are changing?
