Today is the 9th MNREGA Divas. Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural employment guarantee Act is one of the rare kind of social security
legislation India has seen in the history. The villagers who had no resources
to get employment for a minimum survival wage are benefitted by this legislation.
This piece of legislation aims to guarantee the right to work and ensure
livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed
wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members
volunteer to do unskilled manual work otherwise they are all unemployable in
the modern terms.
Till 2014, the
facility has been extended to 778134 villages from all the States of India for
approximately 30 Crores villagers with an average wage of Rs 130.00. This is a massive
social security scheme with tremendous reach to the poor allowing them a life
of respect. These kind of social security measures go a long way to keep the
community happy and prevent suicides in our poverty ridden society.
The poor had no savior to rescue them from the clutches of
the poverty. This piece of law has given them a breather to live in respect
wherever the scheme has been implemented. There are challenges of corruption and
mismanagement. Considering the size of the scheme they will be there but
corrective action should be initiated to prevent the pilferage of funds
illegally. The people misappropriating the funds should be strictly dealt with.
All these legislation should come include the strictest punishment and the
time frame to deal with the cases.
No government should take credit for this because it is for the poor and passed in the parliament by all the parties. And also when one takes advantage the others will try to stop this. Success of these schemes is possible when all the parties take interest in the schemes otherwise will be short-lived. Whichever governments come to power should come out with
such innovative schemes and should not stop such things. The society will be a
better place to live when we share our resources with the poor.
