‘We are like this only’…by Dorothy Victor in Sunday Herald, was a
reminder of the fact of how good we are at work. Everyone says we are a
hardworking country where people even slog after working hours and during weekends.
Why are we like that? Is what the article tries to reiterate?
Even though our work culture is to work 24X7X 365, our
productivity has not even raised near that of the Europeans who do not work
after their working hours unless badly needed. We are a developing nation,
where we have to prove ourselves to be more efficient because of which we have
to work hard. But hard work does not make it a smart work and it is the smart work
which fetches more result. Most of the time smart fast work is not appreciated
and the same person will be loaded with more work thus protecting the other
sycophants who sit late doing the same work which could be finished much within
the working hours, if they don’t waste time and focus on their work.
Dorothy also writes that all the managers and
supervisors are concerned with this culture. But instead of being worried they
should amend their ways to be disciplined so that others will follow them. The
culture always comes from the top and not from the bottom. We are all familiar
with the common adage ‘Yatha Raja, thatha praja’ which means the people follow
the king. But most of the bosses would like to enjoy more privileges than
sacrificing them. They want their subordinates to be their sycophant. The will
never appreciate a neutral employee who keeps himself to his work and nothing
more. They would like the sycophants to visit their house and praise their
better half. This is where the culture deteriorates.
